WBA (regular) light heavyweight world champion Dmitry Bivol (17-0; 11 KO) has not called out Canelo (53-1-2; 36 KO) for the first time. Even before Canelo’s fight against Kovalev, Bivol said on several times that he was happy to fight with the Mexican at any time and that fight still seemed important to him. Shortly after taking Kovalev’s WBO light heavyweight world championship title, Canelo also gave back the belt and is scheduled to fight into the super middleweight next time. His coach said the light heavyweight wasn’t really for Canelo, which is probably why he didn’t take on either Bivol or Beterbiev in that weight. However, Bivol is very happy to go down to the super middleweight if the fight depends on it.
“I’ve said now for over a year that I’m ready, willing, and able to move down to super middleweight and fight Canelo. I have been training throughout the COVID-19 crisis and have watched on social media that Canelo has as well. … I know that my team and Golden Boy Promotions have discussed this option, and we are willing to make the fight on very reasonable financial terms. My team understands that unlike many other opponents, my goal is not the payday but to face the best in boxing today. I know I can beat him, and the real rewards will come after this fight.” – said Bivol.
Bivol’s manager also says that money is not the point for them and they are willing to take on the fight for less money than Canelo’s previous opponents have asked for / received. For Bivol, glory is the important, that defeating the best.
Both Canelo and Bivol have a contract with DAZN, from this point of view it would be easy to organize the fight. In addition, the manager says DAZN would also support this clash.
In principle, Billy Joe Saunders would be Canelo’s next opponent in super middleweight, but because of the coronavirus and Saunders ’scandalous video, there might be nothing out of this fight. Bivol is willing to stand up to his Mexicans for the first time, as the virus situation allows. This pairing might be even more exciting than Canelo – Saunders.
