Now that the decade is over, people are often asked who was the best boxer of the last decade. Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Canelo Alvarez and Andre Ward, who are most often mentioned as being able to take this honorable title. Of course, everyone has their own opinion on who was the best. The promoter Bob Arum says it’s clear that Manny Pacquiao (62-7-2; 39 KOs) was the best of the decade, despite losing one or two.
According to Arum Floyd Mayweather Jr. not close to Pac Man. After all, his last real match was in 2015, then he returned in 2017 against an MMA fighter to set his 50-0 record. In contrast, Pacquiao has been active throughout the last decade, making big matches against big opponents. He is 40 years old and still fighting, in addition to being a world champion, having won a world championship title in eight weight groups, and this is the fourth decade in which he can claim to be a world champion. He also had two great wins last year and won another World Championship title.
“Fighter of the decade? I say Manny Pacquiao… because of (his) body of work throughout the decade, when he fought regularly; he fought all those fighters. He was the one guy that [during] the years that Mayweather retired or didn’t fight carried the sports. … I don’t even think it is close; I don’t think anybody can compare to Manny as fighter of the decade. … It is still Manny Pacquiao fighting. And that’s the important thing whether he’s fighting for Top Rank or fighting for another promotion, it’s still Manny Pacquiao in the ring. Clearly, he’s the fighter of the decade. … Manny Pacquiao belongs to the greats and will go down with the greats!” – Arum told The Manila Times.
Pacquiao took 16 fights between 2010 and 2019, winning 12 of those. True this decade, he had a nasty KO defeat against Marquez in 2012 and a scoring defeat against Mayweather in 2015, but he has won quite a few big names. For example he defeating Marquez in 2011 (before Marquez defeated him), but defeated Brandon Rios, Antonio Margarito, Shane Mosley, Keith Thurman or Timothy Bradley Jr. (lost once, defeated twice ). Of the 16 matches, 13 were world title fights in welter and super welterweight.
Pacquiao has already was the fighter of the decade, once at BWAA and The Ring Magazine, he has been named the best fighter of the year 2000-2009.
